Reading workshops for parents promote the importance of parents reading with their children

Ahead of our World Book Day celebrations at the beginning of March, parents were invited into Meon Junior School to participate in the Parent Reading Workshops.

The sessions, which saw upper school families come into the school on Tuesday and lower school relatives come into school on Thursday, encouraged the adults to read with their child and engage in interactive sessions led by the children’s classroom teachers.

This popular event was focused on emphasising the importance of reading, while building positive relationships with parents and carers to promote the best possible outcome for every child.

Parents were also given insight into how the school organises its reading curriculum so they could understand how to support their children with reading at home.

Christine Turner, the Head of School at Meon Junior, praised the parents for taking the time to support the children with their reading.

She said: "I feel very proud to see the parents supporting us and the children with their reading. We have been on a long journey with our reading curriculum and are proud to showcase what we have achieved in partnership with our parents.

"Events such as our Parent Reading Workshops are focused on the importance of making reading the heart of everything we do. It’s important for every child to engage with a broad and balanced reading curriculum, and this week has been all about celebrating that."

The school has an employed librarian who provides support and advice on the school’s book selection and is available to speak with in the library after each school day. They currently assist and advise parents as well as students with book selection.
